CHURCHSTANTON Primary School is good, with outstanding features, inspectors have found.

The school is celebrating after receiving a glowing OFSTED report and the head teacher says further improvements are on the way.

The school has just over 80 children, aged four to 11, on its roll.

The key findings of the report were:

  • Pupils are exceptionally well cared for by the adults at the school
  • Most pupils are very well behaved and personal development is excellent
  • Children make good progress and are reaching standards that are above average
  • The head teacher and staff are working hard to make sure the school becomes even better
  • Teaching and learning, as well as activities planned by staff, are good Head teacher Simon Mills said: "The school has continued to improve since the last inspection in 2004 and all the hard work by the staff, children and governors has now been recognised in the new report.

"The benchmarks for the different criteria have moved in the last four years and are now even harder to attain. So to achieve a grading of good is very rewarding, but to have outstanding elements as well is brilliant.

"I am also confident that in the near future Churchstanton will soon become an outstanding school in all areas!

"Thank you to everyone for contributing towards making our school a special place to be."

The overall effectiveness of the school, and the effectiveness of the foundation stage were graded as 'good'. Some aspects of the school, such as the way children are cared for and supported, were judged 'outstanding'.

The inspector has recommended the school ensures that pupils achieve as well in writing as they do in other subjects, with a particular focus on boys in years three to six.
