Pupils remember 'outstanding' Lizzie

Pupils at Taunton school have paid tribute to former student Elizabeth "Lizzie" Pincock who was killed in a bus crash in Ecuador.

The 19-year-old died along with four other Britons as they travelled from the capital, Quito, to fishing village Puerto Lopez as part of a gap-year trip.

Taunton School last night held two informal services of remembrance for Lizzie, who had been the heart of school life.

She was head of Weirfield house in the class of 2007, she played hockey for the school's first team and directed prep-schoolchildren in the school play.

Lizzie had been working in the preparatory school up until March, when she left to go on her trip.

Headmaster Dr John Newton told the County Gazette: "The school expresses its deep condolences to the Pincock family on hearing the news of the tragic death of their daughter, Lizzie.

"Lizzie left the school in 2007 and had been employed as a gap year student in the Prep School until March 2008.

"Lizzie was a distinguished pupil at the school. She was gifted in sport, in drama and in music. As the head of her house and a prefect, she was an outstanding leader and had an exceptional future before her."

The other victims were named as Emily Sadler, 19, Indira Swann, 18, Rebecca Logie, 19 - all students taking a year out between school and university - and Sarah Howard, 26, the trip leader.

Nicola Cox, 19, from Ridings School in Bristol, was one of 12 Britons, a French national and two Ecuadorians all injured. Ecuadorian police said a lorry carrying a load of sand crashed into the left side of the bus in Sancan. Local authorities have appointed a prosecutor to investigate the tragedy.

Taunton School is allowing people who knew Lizzie and who wish to come and pay tribute to her to visit the School Chapel where a book of remembrance will be available.
