VANDALS have daubed graffiti on the outside of the former Debenhams store in the centre of Taunton.

Bright red lettering has been sprayed onto panels carrying pictures charting some of the town's history.

The graffiti - some of it offensive - is highly visible to anyone walking or driving past the large building in North Street.

The timeline was put up around a year ago in March last year after the store closed in May 2021 when Debenhams collapsed.

It follows Taunton's history from the Anglo Saxon period to the 20th Century.

Somerset West and Taunton Council’s Emergency High Street Recovery Group in Taunton, which consists of local businesses representatives and ward councillors, commissioned the project with funding from the Emergency Town Centre Recovery Fund to improve the appearance of the town, attract visitors and boost the local economy.

The County Gazette has contacted Somerset West and Taunton Council for a comment.
