Somerset teachers come out on top

TEACHERS from across Somerset have been selected as the best of the best in the tenth annual South West Teaching Awards.

Parents, pupils and colleagues gathered at a ceremony at the Bath Assembly Rooms on Tuesday to see which of the short listed teachers would come out on top.

Peter Hoyland, head teacher at Dunster First School, was presented with the National College for School Leadership, NCSL, Award for Head Teacher of the Year in a Primary School.

Martyn Ellis, The King Alfred School, Highbridge, was presented with the Guardian Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School and the GTC Award for Excellence in Professional Development.

Iain Crabtree from Hambridge Community Primary School was presented with the NCSL Award for Headteacher of the Year.

Sarah-Jane Moore from Bucklers Mead Community School was presented The Guardian Award for Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School with Milverton Primary School bagging the Department for Children, Schools and Families Award for Sustainable Schools.

Caroline Evans, chief executive of the Teaching Awards said: I am delighted to congratulate all our award-winners who deserve every bit of praise and applause.

"They are real heroes among their colleagues, pupils and parents and now the wider world knows what a difference they make."

Winners will now go forward to the national Teaching Awards ceremony at the London Palladium in October.

The celebration, which is part of the Teaching Awards fellows weekend, will be broadcast on BBC2.

Dave Hancock from BT, one of the event sponsors, said: "Teachers play a vital role in society, educating our children and giving them the skills to succeed in life.

"The Teaching Awards provides the perfect platform from which to celebrate teachers for their continued dedication and commitment to society."
