STAFF at Taunton’s UK Hydrographic Office discovered what it’s like to have a disability at work at an event this week.
The session, in conjunction with trade unions Prospect and Public and Commercial Services Union, aimed to raise awareness of disability among staff.
It focused on facilities at the site, such as wheelchair ramps, dyslexia software and IT equipment, as well as demonstrations and advice from support agencies.
Wayne Hurren dropped by with his hearing dog Donna, while former Taunton Deane Mayor Cllr Richard Lees took along his guide dog Ramble.
Mr Lees said: “I am living proof that having a disability doesn’t stop you from playing a useful role in society or providing a useful input in the workplace given the right support.”
Other participants included the Royal National Institute of Blind People, Mind and Compass Disability Services.
UKHO staff took part in a quiz and had the chance to try manoeuvring a wheelchair around the premises.
Organiser Roz Boyer said: “The event is the first we’ve held on this scale.
“It was designed to give staff a real insight into what it’s like to have a disability in a work environment, as well as providing help and advice.”
