A THURLOXTON man campaigning for greater safety measures on the A38 between Taunton and Bridgwater is disputing county council accident figures.

The county claimed last week there had been two “slight accidents” due to driver error and one death due to suicide at the area near the crossing near Adsborough and Thurloxton between 2002 and 2007.

But Graham Warburton has submitted these three photos of crashes there in the past year.

“These accidents do not appear slight to me,” said Mr Warburton.

“Any of them could have resulted in loss of life and there may well have been other accidents that I missed.

“And the reference to driver error is irrelevant – apart from mechanical fault, all accidents are due to error on someone’s part.”

Mr Warburton has been campaigning for improvements to the road, He also wants to see buses routed through Thurloxton so passengers do not have to cross the busy section of the A38 and a 50mph limit at the Maypole crossroads.

Meanwhile, Creech St Michael Parish Council members are holding a site meeting to discuss the issue.

A spokeswoman for Somerset County Council said the A38 between Walford Cross and Dunball has been designated a ‘red route’.

She added: “There will be work to raise public awareness and increase safety, such as further lines and signs to make people aware of potential hazards, and mobile safety enforcement.”
