YOUNGSTERS at Halcon Primary School in Taunton have been celebrating after a good OFSTED report.

The school was described as an “oasis of calm” during the inspection with teaching, and pupils learning, attitudes and behaviour also praised.

Head teacher Richard Adams said: “For the school to be recognised as good with outstanding features represents a real achievement for the whole school community.

“I was especially pleased that the inspectors recognised the children good academic progress together with their excellent behaviour and attitudes to learning.”

Youngsters have also been taking part in a Right to Read Scheme where volunteers from Taunton's Hydrographic Office help pupils improve their reading skills by reading to them an hour a week.

Co-ordinator Emma Wise said: “Sometimes you know you are the only person to have sat and read a book with a child since last week and by giving that child just ten minutes you can see a huge improvement in their reading by the end of term.”

And the pupils have also shown their heart by helping raise £620 as part of Ian Botham's charity walk for childhood Leukaemia in Taunton.
