A WELLINGTON councillor is calling for the town’s proposed state-of-the-art play area to be built in the recreation ground.
Last Friday residents were asked by Taunton Deane Council to choose between two sites – Howard Road or nearby Roly Poly Green.
But neither site received substantial support and Cllr Andrew Govier is calling for a third option.
Cllr Govier said: “I think the residents completely rule out Roly Poly Green.
“No one thought that this site was suitable as to access it children would have to cross two very busy roads and I have to say it was never a scheme that I supported.
“The situation at Howard Road was more balanced with almost equal numbers wanting something there and the same number against it.
“My own view is that the proposed scheme is too large, it is a ‘town-wide’ scheme that would be better placed in a more central location, like the rec.”
Last Friday’s consultations were called by Taunton Deane Council and children’s charity Barnardo’s who have money to invest in the site.
Cllr Govier added: “I was really pleased that so many people took part in the consultation at Howard Road.
“Residents had strong views on the matter and it was a really important couple of hours. It showed that people really care about the area that they live in and are keen to have their say.”
Cllr Govier’s stance is being supported by Ross Henley, leader of the council, who said he will be talking to council officers about the issue.
