PARENTS are hopeful that Somerset County Council will review a decision to close Nynehead Primary School.

The previous LibDem administration at County Hall voted earlier this year to close the school at the end of the summer term next year.

Nynehead would then merge with Oake and Bradford Primary School in a new building costing £1.25m.

Kathy Boyd, chairman of the Friends of Nynehead School who was part of the action team fighting the cost-cutting closure of the small village school, said she is hopeful the Conservatives who are now in power will review the decision.

Mrs Boyd said: “The closure was rubber stamped in April, but the new council will hopefully review that favourably.

“The whole process needs looking at to see if there is any way the school can be kept open.

“The parents and the community all opposed the closure and we're thrilled there is a chance that could be reversed by a new administration.

“We understand there are lots of problems in reversing that decision, but this has given us hope.”

Cassie Davies, speaking for the Nynehead Action Group, said after April's decision: “The people of Nynehead will not be giving up lightly.

“If necessary, the action group will take the matter to the Local Government Ombudsman.”

A spokeswoman for Somerset County Council said no meetings had yet been held over the issue by the new administration. “Nothing has changed at this stage,” she said.
