FORGET jam and Jerusalem, a new incarnation of the WI being set up in Norton Fitzwarren is more into pole dancing and firefighters.
Emma Jenkins, 34, is setting up Somerset’s first branch of WI Lite – the latest in a new generation of WI groups appearing around the country.
She told the County Gazette that the group was open to all but that activities would be aimed at women aged 20-45 and would include curry nights, cheese and wine evenings (with an emphasis on the wine), safety talks from firefighters, theatre trips, ‘know your boobs nights’ for bra fittings, a burlesque night and belly dancing.
She said: “This is aimed at fun loving gals.
“Meetings will involve some traditional WI activities like cake making and how to make yourself a fab pair of curtains but will also have less traditional features like belly dancing and pole dancing lessons.
“It is a chance to meet like minded women have a glass of wine or cup of tea and a good gossip with a lot of fun to boot. Outings and activities will also be arranged as a group.
“Despite the modern agenda, the principles and traditions of the WI are still of utmost importance to WI Lite groups.”
The first meeting, a cheese and wine evening, is due to take place at Norton Fitzwarren Village Hall on September 21 and is open to all. Meetings will take place on the third Monday of the month from 7.30-9.30pm with an annual membership costing about £30. For details, call Emma on 01823-254836 or 07591 868507.
