THE brains behind the new multi-million pound Minehead Eye youth and community centre celebrated a landmark in its construction by touring the site for themselves this week.
The steel frame has been erected and, for the first time, the scale of the heart of the building, which will house extreme sports facilities, has been revealed.
Young people and project directors took a tour to see how their ideas were being put into practice.
Albert Hocking, one of the local students involved in the project, said: “After so many years, I can’t believe it’s really happening and we are getting such a great youth centre in Minehead.”
Project leader Naomi Griffith said: “It’s so exciting to see the building growing and developing every day. Now the steel frame is up, it’s great to see how the space works.
“The next steps are the brickwork and the roof. Hopefully, the building will be weather-tight by the New Year, so the risk of delays diminishes.
“At the moment we are on target for completion in May 2010 when the building will be handed over to the project team to carry out final preparations before the grand opening.”
She added: “I know people have doubted whether Minehead Eye will ever really be built but now there is certainly no denying that we are on our way.”
As well as catering for extreme sports, Minehead Eye will provide access to facilities which encourage creativity in sports, art, music and media.
