HOUSING for up to 200 people and a new 350-bay park and ride could be built in Williton as part of wider plans for a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point.

The proposals were revealed in a pre-application document from energy firm EDF, the company behind plans to construct two new nuclear power stations at Hinkley Point.

The document says that at the peak of construction, local accommodation would need to be found for about 2,400 workers.

Two possible sites have been identified for the proposed park and ride development and campus accommodation – one to the west of Williton behind Mamsey House residential care home and one to the east beyond Catwell.

As well as the proposals for Williton, plans are afoot for a 700-bed temporary campus, including other amenities such as restaurants and leisure facilities, to be built on-site.

Meanwhile, other proposals include accommodation for another 500 workers in Bridgwater and a further 320-bed unit in Cannington.

Two park and ride facilities would also be built on the outskirts of Bridgwater – one with 750 bays and another with 350. A 900-space park and ride would also be constructed in Cannington.

EDF also proposes to build a Cannington bypass, linking the A39 to the existing Hinkley Point road.

Under plans, Combwich Wharf would also be refurbished to allow freight to be delivered by water, while freight handling facilities would be constructed in Bridgwater and Cannington.
