DRIVERS are being asked to ‘Look Out for Bikes’ in a road safety initiative aimed at reducing the number of bikers being killed and injured on Somerset roads.

During the next couple of months as the weather gets warmer, more and more cyclists and motorcyclists will be taking to the roads.

The Somerset Road Safety Partnership is asking drivers to double check for bikers when pulling out from a junction or turning.

The campaign has been sparked by statistics showing that during the past three years more than 1,000 motorcyclists and cyclists have been injured on roads around the county.

Road safety officer Jim Newman said: “Many crashes occur because drivers fail to spot the cyclist or motorcyclist.”

The partnership has launched a poster campaign to remind drivers to ‘Look Out for Bikes’ on increasingly busy roads.

Riders are also being advised to wear the correct helmet and bright protective clothing so they can be clearly seen by other road users.

Once again, I applaud Jim and his team for some pro-active work. I for one will be leading by example and taking advantage of Bikesafe when they publish the dates too.

How about bikes thinking about other road users, or am I the only person who thinks that coming out of nowhere at way above the speed limit (If I didn't know better I'd have to assume that motorbikes have an exemption to the speed limit), overtaking on roundabouts or out of junctions after other vehicles have started their manoeuvres, pedal bikes jumping red lights at crossroads (I witnessed a near-miss of today, after a bike passed me without slowing down at all when I was sat at a red light) and motorbikes sitting within inches of a bumper when the driver has the audacity to stick to the 30mph limit is a recipe for a trip to hospital. Instead of "Many crashes occur because drivers fail to spot the cyclist or motorcyclist" how about "Many crashes occur because motorcyclists and cyclists think they are immortal but sadly find out the hard way they are not" - Isn't it about time for a bit of "bike think" instead think bike", or is it just too easy to keep on blaming motorists and then claiming on their insurance when things go wrong?

It may be more beneficial to bikers if a campaign called 'Look out for cars' was run. Many cyclists appear oblivious to the fact that cars use the roads.
