Shoplifting arrests dip in town centre

THE number of people nabbed for shoplifting in Taunton town centre has fallen by more than a quarter thanks to a ‘no arrest’ policy.

And while there were 79 fewer arrests – bucking the national trend of a rise of a third over the past year – retailers’ losses have not increased as a result.

The initiative, introduced by Taunton Retailers Against Crime in February last year, has also saved an estimated 400 hours of police time.

It involves security staff stepping in when they believe a customer is about to steal something – and before they leave the shop.

TRAC co-ordinator Andy Sharman said: “I’m really pleased with the results of this policy.

“Some members had their doubts when we introduced it, but we’ve proved that working together and sensible intervention can not only prevent crime but also save money.”

Cllr Alan Wedderkopp, Taunton Deane Council executive member for community leadership, said: “I’m particularly pleased to see a pragmatic approach from our retailers which doesn’t result in unnecessary arrests and time wasted.

“It’s particularly important that one mistake from an individual, particularly if they’re a young person, doesn’t have to end in a criminal record.”

Insp Sam Williams said police are working closely with TRAC and the council in implementing the policy.

He added: “Catching those who commit crime is part of our role, however our aim is to prevent crime and make safer and stronger neighbourhoods for our communities.

“Where it is necessary or appropriate to make arrests we do, and we ensure those offenders are brought to justice.”

Laughable.

Sounds like a load of Crime Reduction Action Partnership from TRAC to me.

"Excuse me sonny, are you about to steal that dvd?"

Its not the police you want to blame: Its the magistrates/courts shoplifters. As a police officier arresting the same people sometime 3 times a week to find that the courts just fined them, gave them yet another conditional discharge after conditional discharge. Whats the point in the police spending hours on these type of crime so I am glad taunton police spend their time doing more worthwhile activities. For the record we need a poilce station in taunton.

So, let me see if I understand this right. The police implement a policy of not arresting people for shop lifting, then report a reduction in the number of arrests for shop lifting............. Am I missing anything here. I know, lets implement a no arrest policy for all crimes and then we wouldn't need the police as there would be no arrestable crime ever committed.
