An image of Firepool's future

REGENERATION bosses have released this photo showing a vision for the future of Firepool this week as an exhibition marks five years of Project Taunton.

Taunton’s empty shop project, Our Place, Your Place: Taunton, at the old Peter Briggs shoe shop in High Street, is this week focusing on the town’s regeneration, led by Project Taunton.

Among the projects worked on by the group since 2005 are a completed flood protection scheme, the Somerset County Cricket Club ground redevelopment, Somerset Square created, Firepool demolition work underway, and the Northern Inner Distributor Road designed and approved.

Cllr John Williams, chairman of the Project Taunton steering group, said: “I am extremely proud of the progress made to date. This project, which is the largest ever single development contemplated for Taunton, is starting to deliver results in record time - I congratulate all involved for such a successful first five years.”

Ian Franklin, project director, added: “The improvements being made in Taunton are both high quality and sustainable – in other words, it won’t all have to start again in 30 years time. We want people to understand that we’re doing the very best we can to make Taunton a first class place in which to live and work for generations to come.”

Much of Taunton’s regeneration programme has been made possible because of central government funds secured for the town by Project Taunton and its partners.

Why can't architects be honest and show places as they REALLY will be.
.
Show the litter everywhere; the druggies and winos; the boarded up shops - and as a last touch, some coppers nicking a shoplifter.
.
Those 'beautiful' images are only true for about two months of the year....

I'm fascinated by the scale shown in the picture.
Those two pillars at the front of the main building must be 30 feet high!!

I'm supportive of the regeneration but this looks like a carbuncle from the 80's. What a lost opportunity.

What do you mean some coppers nicking a shoplifter? The only chance of being nicked by a copper for shoplifting in taunton is if you were up at Tesco's as thats the only place you will find them.

At least it looks fairly modern, compared with a lot of Taunton new build projects to date which try to pretend they are built in the past.

It also looks mainly pedestrianised which is certainly welcome. Hopefully they will still permit bikes though.
