SUPERB individual displays from Matt Wood and Charl Willoughby were the highlights of Somerset's exciting 51-run victory over Sri Lanka in front of a bumper County Ground crowd on Sunday.

Wood, who has not enjoyed the best of form so far this season, hit 116 from 120 balls as Somerset piled up 332-6, before Willoughby claimed 6-43 as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 281 with 3.3 overs left.

After winning the toss and opting to bat, Somerset lost Jon Francis in the first over. But, Wood added 164 for the second wicket with Arul Suppiah who scored an impressive 72.

Cameron White and Wood took the total onto 230, when Wood was caught at mid off by Dilhara Fernando off Ruchira Perera for 116.

White and James Hildreth added 52, with 23 of the runs coming from one over from former Somerset overseas player Sanath Jayasuriya. The young Australian skipper clobbered for three sixes a four and a single, much to the delight of the sell out crowd.

White made 64 before being bowled by Lasith Malinga, but his departure wasn't the end of the fireworks as Hildreth took 18 off the last over to take his score onto 64 and Somerset onto 332-6.

Willoughby got Somerset off to a dream start when Sri Lanka responded by having opener Upal Tharanga leg before with the first ball of the innings.

The left arm seamer did even better the next over, taking wickets with his first and fifth ball, the first of which was Jayasuriya to have the tourists reeling at 15-3.

Kumar Sangakarra and Russel Arnold settled things down, before Richard Johnson accounted for the former with the total on 79. White then had Arnold leg before and there seemed no way back for Sri Lanka who had slipped to 113-5.

Prasanna Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan took the total onto 238 before a slick piece of fielding by Suppiah saw him touch a hard driven return onto the stumps at the non strikers to remove Jayawardene for 55.

Willoughby then struck in quick succession with the score on 270 and 271 respectively, Wood ran out Dilshan for 97 with a superb throw that hit the stumps from the cover boundary and it was left to Willoughby to wrap things up when he had Fernando caught by White at mid-off as Sri Lanka were all out for 281.

After the game, a delighted Wood said: "This was a tremendous win for us and with a packed house there is nowhere better to play.

"It was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable experience.

Skipper White said: "We have had a good track record against the touring sides in recent years so we will be looking to carry this success forward into the next game that we play. This win will have given our players some good experience against a quality attack and to beat Sri Lanka is even better."
