Dave Turle Memorial match: Tiverton 20, Wiveliscombe 19.
WIVELISCOMBE’S final game of the season at Tiverton was an entertaining encounter.
Both team’s fielders changed line ups to their recent league games, but it did not detract from a well contested game.
Tiverton have had the better of this fixture, since it was born 20 years ago with Wivey winning on only a few occasions, but they nearly grabbed a victory on this occasion.
Wivey started the stronger and led 5-14 at half time. John Palk, playing at prop, scored the visitors’ opening try and Tom Chappey converted.
Tivvey replied with an Olly King try but James Kavanagh, who had an impressive game in the centre for Wivey, intercepted a wayward Tiverton pass to score under the post’s. Chaffey converted to put the visitors 14-5 up at half-time. Tiverton pulled back to lead 15-14 with a Wayne Broomfield try and two Jimmy Atkins’ penalties.
However, Wivvy looked to have put the result beyond doubt when they scored their third try through centre Toby West 15-19 but a Tristian Holtzer try in the dying seconds of the match clinched victory for Tiverton.
