Minehead chef in television competition

A MINEHEAD chef has beaten off competition from across the South West to represent the region in a televised national cooking competition.

Lucy Deane will appear on the new series of Britain's Best Dish on ITV on Monday.

The annual competition aims to find the country's most delicious starter, main course and dessert, as chosen by a panel of judges.

Amateur chefs cook their signature dishes and the overall winner gets £10,000.

The 29-year-old, who lives on her parents' farm in Minehead, completed a design course at Somerset College of Art and Technology, before deciding to pursue her passion for food. She said: “I'm a food fanatic.

“I'm self-employed and work as a chef for private functions.

“I'm pretty much self-taught. I got my cooking skills from my home and picked it up that way.”

Lucy will cook her own creation, the Exmoor Queen of Puddings with duck eggs from her parents' farm, flour from Dunster mill and whortleberries, which are indigenous to Exmoor.

The cream pudding has a breadcrumb base, a jam layer and a baked meringue topping.

“I'm quite keen to support our local food and that's one of the things we've been asked to do on the show.

“We've been asked to pick local ingredients to use in our recipes.

“I had to go through a few auditions, so I'm glad I made it to through to represent the South West,” she added.
