Taunton and District Citizens Advice Bureau has seen a huge influx in inquiries due to “an astonishing level of debt”.

Outlining the increase in her annual report, bureau manager Liz Fothergill said the charity has dealt with 7,674 clients, up 4% on the previous year.

She said: “The areas of welfare benefits, debt, employment, relationships and housing remain the highest areas of concern, with welfare and debt accounting for more than half of the issues raised.

“The bureau continues to deal with an astonishing level of debt.”

There were more CAB-assisted bankruptcies last year and 75 Debt Relief Orders.

A total of 48 employment tribunal applications led to payouts of more than £240,000.

Other highlights included an improved phone system, giving clients better access; the launch of Somerset Advice Network, enabling people to get advice more easily; the expansion of CAB’s premises with a phone suite and extra office.

Mrs Fothergill added: “Over the next year, we aim to continually improve access to service and reach an even wider section of the community.”

Chairman David Rees praised the team of volunteers, saying: “What statistics don’t perhaps convey is the highly effective leadership that enables these things to happen and of course the sheer hard work and the very high standards of service that paid staff and volunteers achieve.”

CAB is holding its annual general meeting at St John Ambulance HQ, in Canon Street, Taunton, at 12 noon on Wednesday, September 8.
