WEST Somerset councillors have overwhelmingly voted to raise serious objections to EDF’s proposed development of two nuclear reac tors at Hinkley Point.

Council members branded EDF’s proposals as “wholly inadequate and completely lacking in detail, justification and evidence” at a special full council meeting last week.

Councillors agreed that EDF was not taking suitable steps to reduce the negative impacts the development would have on West Somerset residents, with particular concern raised for residents in Stogursey, who live close to the proposed develop ment.

EDF’s plans for traffic, waste man agement, noise, housing and tourism impact have all been criticised.

Concern was also raised over a self- contained on-site campus for 700 workers, which councillors fear will create segregation within the commu nity.

EDF’s director of planning and external affairs for nuclear new build, says the public’s views will be consid ered and is encouraging residents to comment on the proposals.

He said: “The views of local people are important to us. We made a num ber of changes to our plans following the first stage of our consultation and we will continue to work with local authorities and communities to limit any adverse effects as far as possible.”

Residents can view and comment on the plans at www.edfconsultation.

Members of the public are encour aged to attend the next county council meeting today (Thursday) at 2pm at Bridgwater and Albion FC.

Once the consultation stage ends on Monday EDF can apply to the Infrastructure Planning Commission for planning permission.
