QUEEN'S College pupils have upped the school's A-level results by a massive 10% since last summer. Headmaster Chris Alcock called it "a staggeringly impressive increase."

The proportion of students gaining the crucial A/B grades was 78.5%, up from 68% in 2005. Since 2003 this A/B figure at Queen's has risen from 56% to the current level, well above national levels of so-called "grade inflation".

"It's difficult to put one's finger on any single factor creating this marvellous set of results," commented Mr Alcock, "But we're a relaxed and successful school where the students and staff are very supportive of one another in both academic and co-curricular activities.

"What I'm particularly pleased about is that these figures would do huge credit to many highly selective schools, whereas we're determined to keep a broad entry range at the ages of 11 and 13."

In practical terms the key result of these high A/B grades is that Queen's pupils are generally successful in gaining places on the most selective and prestigious higher education courses. This year these ranged from David Gorton studying medicine at Cambridge to Tom Carter's opportunity to pursue acting at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

"This is the culmination of a wonderful year of achievement," commented Mr Alcock. "Whether it's been in the exam room, on the playing fields or in the performing arts our pupils have been simply outstanding."
