GOVERNORS at Burrowbridge Primary School have begun moving forward with plans to close its doors forever, despite Somerset County Council voting to save it from closure.

The school's future has been under review since October when the County Council announced that it was on the list of educational centres due to be shut down as a result of falling pupil numbers.

John Osman, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, has now revealed that the school is no longer being considered for closure.

But despite his decision, the school's governing body has decided to press ahead with a consultation on their plan to close the school and send its pupils to Stoke St Gregory Primary School.

David Fothergill, County Councillor for North Curry, said: “I am disappointed that so soon after the County Council's decision to keep Burrowbridge School open the Governors have decided to commence consultation on its closure.

“The school has served the community for 300 years but future generations of Burrowbridge children will no longer be able to go to their village school if this proposal goes through.

“Once it has closed there will be no re-opening.”

Mr Fothergill has also expressed concern over the governors' decision to hold the consultation in Stoke St Gregory rather than Burrowbridge itself.

The two schools were unavailable for comment.
