CAMPAIGNERS are calling for a mini roundabout to be built at Wellington's most notorious accident blackspot following another crash on Tuesday morning.

Two cars collided at the staggered crossroads where Pyles Thorne meets Ford Street, leaving one man with a neck injury and two others with facial injuries.

Somerset County Councillor Andrew Govier, Labour, said: “The town council has continually supported some kind of safety measure because it's a dangerous area.

“We've talked about implementing such measures as a roundabout so people can only enter there and not exit but Somerset County Council have said they're not viable.”

Taunton Deane Conservative spokesman Mark Formosa added: “It's not really an exaggeration to say that it's only a matter of time before someone is killed there.”

County councillor Ross Henley. LibDem, added: “There have been so many accidents on this piece of road and it's a real concern for people living in Wellington. It's long overdue that Somerset County Council do something about this.”

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: “Any road safety improvements would only be made if there has been an increase in the number of accidents at a specific site.

“Since the 40mph speed limit was introduced five years ago, there has been a decrease in the number of accidents at the Pyles Thorne junction.

“There have been three slight injury accidents in the last three years which, therefore, does not warrant any further action from the highways authority.”
