HERE are some fascinating facts compiled by Somerset County Council’s Registration Service in honour of today’s Royal Wedding.

Lucky Seven

The Registration Service has confirmed that three Somerset-based couples and four couples from outside the county will be getting married tomorrow on the same day as Prince William and Catherine Middleton.

Somerset bucks the trend

According to reports, marriage is on a steady decline across the country but the opposite seems to be true here in Somerset. Over the past three years, marriages have bucked the trend and have increased steadily with 1,877 in 2009 to 1,937 last year.

More than just marriages Somerset has 16 Ceremony Officers and 34 Registrars based across the county. While they all perform weddings and civil partnerships, they also do a lot more such as the renewal of vows, ‘Eternity Ceremonies’ and baby naming ceremonies, called ‘Welcome Ceremonies’.

Genevieve Branch, area operations manager from Somerset County Council’s registration service, said: “The role of registrar is a really interesting, varied job and you get to meet so many different and fascinating people.

“Every day is special and can take me all over the county. Over the years, some of the strangest things have happened, but the icing on the cake has to be the when a bride ran screaming from the room in the middle of the ceremony, scaring me to death - because she’d seen a spider!”
