Tropiquaria has welcomed a host of new arrivals to its collection of African animals.

Two yellow mongooses from London Zoo, a group of endangered fish from Cameroon and another group of fish from Madagascar known as Pinstripe Dambas will be on display this summer.

Tropiquaria director Chris Moiser said: “When Jane Bassett and I took over Tropiquaria it was always our intention to “Africanise” the collection, because that was where our interests and experience lay.

“Sadly because of the recession we have been slowed down in doing this but now it does seem to be sorting itself out.

I am particularly pleased to have the Yellow Mongoose as they are possibly the most beautiful of the mongooses, and very intelligent. In some parts of their range they will live alongside Meerkats, sharing the same burrow systems.

“The African fish that we have acquired have come to us from Blue Planet, currently the biggest aquarium in the UK.

“The fish from Madagascar are also of conservation interest having been once thought to be extinct in the wild. They are currently listed as critically endangered, in the main because of the limited range in the wild, which was possibly only one lake and secondly because they were considered good eating by the local population.”

Tropiquaria is open from 10.30am to 5pm daily.
