STUDENTS at Kingsmead Community School in Wiveliscombe were treated to a showcase by an internationally renowned Indian actor.
Kalamandam Vijayakumar specialises in Kathakali – an ancient and ritualistic dance-drama where characters are portrayed from epic Hindu stories.
Over 50 primary school children visited Kingsmead and took part in a workshop, and later in the week years 7, 8 and 9 had a workshop based on Asian culture, including poetry, history, art, cookery and Kathakali.
A year 7 drama production was followed by a spectacular performance of Kathakali for the whole community.
Julie Elmy, director of specialism at Kingsmead, said: “Students learn about different cultures and develop their understanding about global trade, international links and sustainable development.
“The Kathakali project has been a wonderful learning experience.”
