POTENTIAL funding cuts to Wellington Youth Centre could have a “damaging effect on the lives of young people,” a leading politician has claimed.

The centre and its services are at risk following Somerset County Council's decision to drastically reduce the funding that is available for youth work, and instead rely on community groups to provide the activities.

But Councillor Ross Henley, who represents Wellington East on the County Council, is challenging the “disappointing” plans.

He will raise the issue at the Wellington Town Council meeting on Monday, December 5.

Cllr Henley told the County Gazette: “I am very disappointed at the council's plans; they will have a damaging effect on the lives of young people in Wellington.

“The centre was originally paid for using funds raised by the local community and it must be retained for future generations.”

Around 80 youngsters attend the centre's evening sessions.

It also provides intensive support to individuals and students at Court Fields out of the school environment.

Mayor Andrew Govier added. “I have spoken to senior officers at County Hall about the building and I have made it clear that I would like to see the building retained for youth work.

"It may mean that the building is transferred to the control of the Town Council or another community group and I am exploring these possibilities.”

But a County Council spokesman added: “We can confirm that no decision has been made about the future of Wellington Youth Centre.

"We are looking to spend our money on youth services by looking after vulnerable people and in deprived areas”
