Doesn't TDBC want to sell its building? Why don't they have a word with Tesco then we could have a Tesco every half a mile from Galmington right through to Priorswood if we include all the OneStops they own.

I'm sure something a lot more useful could be done with the site than turn it into yet another Tesco. How many stores from the same chain does one town need???? It's beyond ridiculous!!!!

Obviously Tesco dont need to follow the same planning regulations as the rest of us. Planning application was submitted 27th January, two days later notices appear on the sites hoarding stating that the new store will open on 10th April. Does this towns planning committee automatically approve all Tesco applications so the company knows that they will be able to open on the planned date.

Is it a good thing that jobs are being created when it can affect the jobs of people who work in or run the small businesses within walking distance of where this store will be?????????????
The council clearly dont take this into account when they approve planning for such things.
Wonder if they'd be so quick to help those who this can potentially affect???!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!
I'm thinking NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tesco started with a single shop in middlesex decades ago. What you are effectively saying to small businesses is; we want you to be small and successful, but when you get big because of your success we shouldn't like you. Business is a very simple concept and Tesco is doing well because we all shop there. Convienience stores means that they are local to you and to be honest there isn't a Tesco that close to the proposed site. There are 2 co-op's within 500 metres of each other in priorswood, that doesn't seem to have caused any issues?

As long as they stock cheap fags, 3 litre bottles of white "cider", frozen chicken nuggets and The Sport they'll do a roaring trade around there. I would suggest to Tesco they'll need wide aisles as most customers will frequent the shop in their pyjamas at about midday with Chelsea and Tyrone in the double buggy.

Makes good use of a dive of a pub. If they do own One Stop, not sure if they do or not, then they may as well close that one down and it can be converted into residential, never ideal having the store on that busy junction.

Having just looked at the plans, I would like to see more details on the proposed traffic plans. There is already a right turn lane into the site but what is not clear is if you will be able to turn right out of the site.

People need be aware before commenting that this is a clever way of using planning laws. You do not need to apply for planning permission for change of use from class A4 (drinking establishment) to A1 (retail) and as there is no change to the footprint of the building, the planning applications are just for changes to the external appearance of the building. There is little TDBC can do and Tesco have obviously caught onto this and are now looking round for empty pubs!

Shame they didnt purchase the Naval and Military then!

I would be delighted if they moved into the old Three Crowns pub in Taunton Rd/St Mary Street Bridgwater, its been empty for at least 6 years!

@ Postman-Pat. Tesco is doing well because it is sticking a store in every available space it can!!!! What does 1 town need with 6 Tesco's or however many it is??? It's ridiculous!!! And obviously they are doing so well because people like u only flock to the big shops when actually there is a butchers, a news agents & a bakers, all of which are local family-run businesses within a stones throw of where this store will be. But hey, as long as Tesco come out on top because "they did well"!!!!

And I for 1 do NOT shop there because I can't stand the place!!!! It's expensive & their produce is never top quality. Amazes me how they did so well at all really!!!!!

I use the butchers and grocers in galmington, but unfortunately none of those sell milk, cereal, newspapers etc. Tesco has one main store where you can do your whole shop and several convienience stores dotted around the town serving the local communities, nothing wrong with that is there? Tesco isn't expensive, I bought a large pack of shreddies for £1, 4 pints of milk for £1.18 and an outrageously overpriced copy of the somerset county gazette. Perhaps you need to get over your problem with them.

You can also buy the same stuff in asda or morrisons but you don't see them sprouting up wherever they can!!!!!! The point is while Taunton Deane approve plans for these big, multi-million pound companies to put shops wherever they like, it has an affect on the smaller people of society. People who actually work hard to make a living in todays rubbish state. If these people end up losing their jobs/ business, Taunton Deane won't be so quick to help them out as they have Tesco!!!!!!!

Personally I dont shop in Tesco as its a little bit 'chav' for me. There's nothing worse than being seen in public carrying a Tesco carrier bag!
I think it will do well in the Priorswood area, providing Tesco can employ enough security staff to control the local's.

Because Tesco do it better and the other big supermarkets know they couldn't compete. Go to France and see how they do it, they have massive supermarkets like us, but the small independent businesses like boulangeries and patisseries are always thriving. I don’t use the bakers in Galmington because what they offer hasn’t changed for years. I’m not going to support a small business just because they are small. If they have something decent to offer then their business will succeed and grow. It’s a very simple concept.
