A WEST Somerset woman who is deaf and suffers from Coeliac disease is helping to raise awareness of both conditions.

Deb Buller, from Stogursey, is launching a West Somerset Coeliac support group through the Coeliac UK charity.

Coeliac disease (pronounced see-liac) is caused by gluten – found in wheat, barley and rye – triggering an immune reaction and damaging the lining of the small intestine. Other areas can also be affected.

Symptoms of the disease can include constipation, persistent or unexplained nausea and vomiting, recurrent stomach pain, cramping or bloating, tiredness, headaches and weight loss.

Deb, 42, said: “I am setting up the group now as there is nothing in this area to provide support for people with Coeliac.

“I have been Coeliac for two years now and it has affected me for about three years. I had many symptoms.

“A chairperson and treasurer have already been established for the group and I’m appealing for members to join us, not just on the committee.

“Once members have joined, we will arrange a time, date and place to meet to share information, have social get-togethers and generally have a giggle along the way.”

Today (Thursday) Deb will be teaching children at the village pre-school about sign language, as part of Deaf Awareness Week, which began on Monday.
