A CHARITY in Watchet has welcomed a £400 donation out of the blue from the Quantock Rotary Club after facing a series of recent challenges.

Volunteers at Watchet Phoenix in The Esplanade provide lunchtime meals for 30 to 40 elderly and infirm people three days a week.

But it has been struggling to maintain its services after repairs were needed to the microwave, main gas oven and disabled lift in quick succession.

Chair of the Trustees Jean Howe said: “I couldn't believe it, everything just happened at once, so this money could not have come at a better time.

“It is very gratefully received and it is going to go quite a long way towards all the expenses.

“Our clubs are so important to people, many of whom we have known for a long time. People are motivated by the get-togethers and really strong friendships are forged.”

The centre sells teas, coffees and handicrafts at weekends. For details of opening times, upcoming events and how to donate, check the window noticeboard or call Jean on 01984-633298.
