LEANNE Burnell has been found guilty of causing the death of 13-year-old Amy Hofmeister by dangerous driving at Taunton Crown Court.

Burnell, 20, of Bishop's Hull, had denied the charge relating to the incident on June 15 last year.

During the trial the court heard how Burnell had been racing along Blackbrook Way in Taunton with her then-boyfriend Leonard 'Nitty' Jones, 42.

Although it was Jones' Vauxhall Vectra which crashed into Amy and knocked her off her bike, prosecutors had claimed Burnell's driving in her Ford Focus meant she was also responsible for the death.

Jones, of Mulberry Close, Taunton, has already pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and is awaiting sentence.

The jury at Taunton Crown Court retired shortly before 12noon and returned a unanimous guilty verdict.

Details of when Burnell will be sentenced have not yet been revealed.
