Couple notch up 25 years at Wiveliscombe Spar store
THE couple who run Wiveliscombe’s Spar store are celebrating after notching up 25 years of service.
Brian Humphrey and his wife Barbara, of Huish Champflower, moved to the area after taking over the West Street store nearly 30 years ago before it changed to Spar. July 7 will mark 25 years of service for the couple.
Brian told the County Gazette the store is a focal point of the town.
He said: “These stores are important and you often find that clusters of people will gather at them.
“It is a very good job that we both enjoy and the social side of it, getting to know the regulars.
“Ours is very much a social store with its own unique atmosphere and we like to think it is very much at the heart of the community – if we can go the extra mile for our customers, we will.”
Brian has seen a number of changes in his time at the store.
He said: “Convenience retailing has become much more professional these days but in many ways ours is not a typical convenience store. It is heavily grocery-based and we still do things like farmers’ accounts – but we have stopped serving sherry out of barrels.”
