  • "Not really a Union Jack mentioned in the headline because the JACK is the Jack Staff that it is flown from. Union Flag more properly I think."

Are these Union or Scotland flags in Taunton? It's difficult to tell!

The flags in Taunton The flags in Taunton

SOME Scots would love to break away from the rest of the United Kingdom - but it seems they're pretty keen to make their mark in Taunton.

The Union Flag bunting adorning the town centre to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee seems to have turned into the blue and white Scottish flag.

But it's not a political statement of intent by our friends north of the border.

Taunton town centre manager Graham Love explained that it was the fault of the sun - if you can remember what that is.

Mr Love said: “Sunlight has a big effect on red - its UV rays cause it to fade.

“We're discussing with Taunton Deane Council when it's best to get the bunting taken down, but we're mindful of the Olympic celebrations coming up shortly and want to keep it up for that period.”
