Are these Union or Scotland flags in Taunton? It's difficult to tell!

The flags in Taunton The flags in Taunton

SOME Scots would love to break away from the rest of the United Kingdom - but it seems they're pretty keen to make their mark in Taunton.

The Union Flag bunting adorning the town centre to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee seems to have turned into the blue and white Scottish flag.

But it's not a political statement of intent by our friends north of the border.

Taunton town centre manager Graham Love explained that it was the fault of the sun - if you can remember what that is.

Mr Love said: “Sunlight has a big effect on red - its UV rays cause it to fade.

“We're discussing with Taunton Deane Council when it's best to get the bunting taken down, but we're mindful of the Olympic celebrations coming up shortly and want to keep it up for that period.”

If he'd said it had washed off in the rain then I could understand it but sunlight?

All the bunting for the Jubilee should have been taken down within a week or so of the event in my opinion. We were always destined to loose at the football so there was absolutely no point in keeping it up any longer.

Well it doesn't look like a Scottish flag at all... Unless it has changed since I left school ;)

Typical politicians answer. Why not admit that it was cheap rubbish bought from Chaplins although probably at great expense to the BID levy payer rather than actually paying for some quality bunting?

I've not seen any other bunting suffering from this "sunlight" issue in the wettest June on record.

How much longer will this incompetence be tolerated?

Council taxes pay over £65k a year to this quango for what exactly?

Bunting unable to cope with sunlight, Christmas lights that don't work and a failed BID proposal voted out by businesses who don't want to contribute to this embarassment anymore.

Will some one at the council act before the town centre management cements Taunton's reputation of being the town where failure is embraced and celebrated.

Readers may wish to look at these freedom of information requests which repudiates recent assertations that the town centre company is independent of Taunton Deane made by both parties, how much council tax is paid into this "independent" body, and how the additional BID Christmas lights to enhance those provided by Taunton Deane resulted in the businesses providing all of them with no assistance from TDBC (a direct violation of the terms agreed on when the first BID was voted in)

Not really a Union Jack mentioned in the headline because the JACK is the Jack Staff that it is flown from. Union Flag more properly I think.

drDave, I shall not put a D for doctor, as chances you are not one, and therefore not important.

The flags should have stayed up for the duration of the Summer months, with the Jubilee, Euro and soon the Olympics.

The whole Country should carry on celebrating what a year this is for England and the UK.

Although I would have preferred to have seen more St George flags around, but there should be at least a few scattered around all towns 365 days of the year, and not just for celebrations.

We should be proud to be English/British every day.

As said, but more to the point, cut backs mean cheap flags, resulting in cheap looks.
