SKY-WATCHERS in Taunton and Bridgwater reported spotting an unusual cloud formation resembling a tornado in the sky above the towns on Thursday (July 5).

Several readers have contacted both the Somerset County Gazette and Bridgwater Mercury reporting the phenomenon, which was spotted at about 2.45pm.

Natalie, who saw the cloud formation near Bridgwater, said: "It looked cool, it only lasted about five mins then went, you could see it turning and it started small and got bigger then disappeared."

Rob Young, of Blackbrook in Taunton, said: "I was driving through Taunton and noticed something in the sky resembling a tornado.

"Being a keen storm enthusiast I followed it for a few minutes to be in position to get some pictures of it and sure enough it was a funnel cloud, hovering above the Blackbrook area of town.

"It never touched down so no damage was caused but it was definitely a funnel cloud.

"You can tell from the cloud formations that it is pretruding from a storm cell, and was visibly rotating as I sat watching it from a car park near Wickes roundabout for about five minutes."

Stephen Bennett-Troake added: "I was in Taunton and caught what looked like a tornado trying to form. "Only one other person in the street seemed to have noticed."

I was driving between Cotford St Luke and Norton Fitzwarren at around 1455 and saw it on the left of me. It was a slightly shorter and wider than the one in your picture, and I said to my brother that the cloud was funny and looked liked a tornado.
