CHILDREN, parents and staff at a Minehead school are celebrating after receiving a £20,000 grant that brings them close to the total needed to replace their swimming pool.

St Michael’s First School PTA’s campaign only began in earnest in September and now the Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund brings it within £10,000 of its target.

The remaining cash needed will pay for the finishing touches and solar panels – if everything goes to plan, work is expected to start in the autumn.

PTA chair Tracey Sweetland said: “We are absolutely delighted to have secured this investment and thank the local community and everyone who has supported us.

“It is really exciting. Fundraising has been really quick but really hard work, too, and we are so close now.”

West Somerset MP Ian Liddell- Grainger said: “I am absolutely thrilled about this grant. The money will enable the hard-working PTA at St Michael’s to get their much-needed pool. It is a huge boost both for the school and for the Minehead community.”
