A TEAM from Wimbleball Sailing Club did Somerset proud in the last event at Weymouth Academy before the Olympics began.

The 15 youngsters aged between 11 and 17 came fifth out of 30 teams at the Schools National Sailing Championships, which the club had never entered before.

Individual and team achievements were rewarded at a special prize-giving by Olympic gold medallist Paul Goodison.

Simon Hawkes, team manager and coach, who also represented Somerset at this competition in 1979, said: “I am immensely proud of all our competitors, not only for their outstanding results, but also for the team spirit they showed, which I hope will help the team to grow for next year with even more youngsters attending from Wimbleball.

“A fantastic time was had by all and before they left, everyone signed up for next year's competition to be held in Cumbria, as well as the Topper World Championships in Spain.”

People of all ages are welcome to get involved with the club; for more information, visit www.wimbleballsc.org.uk
