Too hot for crumbling A38

Too hot for crumbling A38 Too hot for crumbling A38

MOTORISTS could face problems on the A38 connecting Taunton and Wellington because part of it needs to be resurfaced for the second time in a year.

A section of the busy commuter route between the Blackbird Inn and Blackdown Garden Centre has also been given a recommended speed limit of 30mph because the road has broken up.

The surface was only patched up last year but Somerset County Council says the heat could have forced it to crumble.

The authority said it could not say how much it cost to re-lay the road last summer, nor how much upcoming works would cost.

Phil Anderson, landlord at the Blackbird Inn, said he’s seen highways staff working to fix the road.

He told the County Gazette: “The road looks like it’s been breaking up with the heat. The council has been out there putting down what looks like grit to stop the problem.

“It was only re-surfaced last August.”

Although some drivers will have the option of taking the motorway to travel between the two towns, for many travelling to Rumwell, West Buckland, Oake, Bradford-on-Tone and other places in between the A38 is the quickest and most popular way.

Somerset County Council says it has identified a problem with the road and is looking at potential solutions to aid motorists but didn’t put a timescale on the repairs.

A spokesman said this week: “This stretch of road was surfaced dressed last summer.

“However, the dressing, which is bitumen with chippings on top, can be affected by the heat and this is one of the factors we are looking in to.

“There is a problem with the surface on this particular stretch and the council is working with its highway contractor to identify a suitable permanent solution.

“In the meantime, we have put up advisory speed limits of 30mph to encourage drivers to slow down and take care on this stretch of road. Our commitment, is to maintaining the safety of our highways and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Wettest summer so not hat much heat. I did wonder why these signs had been put up with no explanation. I dont know how scc and the crooks that work there sleep at night. Oh I do iPads and final salary pensions on top of flexi time while the waste millions of tax payers money, leaving our roads in a Dangerous condition.

How come the roads over in the Continent don't suffer like this, where they do actually get some decent hot weather??

TYPICAL COUNCIL CONTRACTORS - They came last year and sprayed tarmac on the road outside our house and threw some gravel at it. It has now all gone. Either piled up at the side of the road where car tyres throw it or down the drains which are now blocked. The only thing council execs do well is party and dine out on rate payers cash!!

Because their public servants arent lazy money grabbing short sighted muppets. Its all about robbing pay paul. Like the tip cut backs that increase fly tipping and save no money whatsoever but they get their tax payer funded wages.

Must also be the same stuff these contractors 'poured' over the footpaths where I live - most of it has washed away now - in less than 2 years. Complete waste of money.

What gets me is that we're all warned against these rogue tarmac layers!

Quite honestly, the way the Highways Authority (or whoever) has been ripped off, they ought to call in the police to investigate the scam.

You can't automatically blame the contractors. I have known SCC go for the cheapest shortest lasting option. They have been badly run now for about the last 7-8 years. They have run up debts and now with the cuts it will be the cheapest shortest term solution to save the management any cash so they can pay their bonuses and ridiculous wages.

They would of specified what they wanted probably knowing full well it wouldn't last it will be fire fighting now for a long time with budget cuts.

This is not a contractors issue .....it's the fact that SCC only pay for cheap patch ups and not for the job to be done properly.....I don't see things improving in the near future.

The surface in question is a surface dressed carriageway, over a traditional tarmacadam surface - the surface dressing & bitumen element of the road appears to have disintegrated over a long stretch, for whatever reason.

The busy road near Caslte Neroche broke up on one of the few days we have had some sun. That was six weeks ago and it hasn't even been patched up yet. I cycle regularly around the area and the roads are the worst they have ever been and I can only see them getting worse and worse as the council have so low budgets. Roads are never properly repaired, just bodged, then re-bodged.
