A CELEBRATION of the life of a “warm-hearted and caring” mother who drowned rescuing her sons takes place today (September 15).

Alison Tooby was swept out to sea going to the assistance of the boys, aged 11 and 13.
She was airlifted to hospital, where she was declared dead.

One of her sons managed to swim ashore, while the other was rescued following the incident at Northcott Mouth, near Bude, in Cornwall.

Her partner, Mike Mcguffie, said: “It was a tragic accident that happened as she was trying to help the boys, who, thank goodness, are alright.”

Ms Tooby, of High Path, Wellington, was a volunteer at Langford Budville Primary School, which her sons previously attended.

Head teacher Keith Sharpe said: “She made a fantastic input to the school in all sorts of different areas.

“She was a central member of the Friends of Langford Budville School Association.

“She maintained and kept the grounds, flowers and plants in lovely order and supported school sales and functions.

“She was an absolutely superb voluntary helper, very generous of her time, warm-hearted and caring.

“It’s a tragic loss. Our thoughts are with Mike and the boys.”

Maggie Norvell, of Runnington Farm Shop, said everyone respected Ms Tooby.

Mrs Norvell said: “People used to come in especially for cakes she made for the shop.

“She was a really good person, an example to everyone.

“She did so many things and was a brilliant mum.”

Her son, John Norvell, said: “She was the nicest person you could imagine.”

A celebration of Ms Tooby’s life takes place at Langford Budville Village Hall at following a private funeral and burial.
