RAF cadets return from Arnhem

A TEAM of 42 Royal Air Force air cadets and staff returned from a visit to Arnhem in Holland this week, having visited the infamous battlefields in and around the town and taken part in a commemorative road march.

The expedition explored the 1944 Battle of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden, as depicted in the film ‘A Bridge Too Far’.

It all started on Wednesday, August 29, with a formal departure parade in Taunton when Parachute Regiment veterans, including one who actually fought in the battle met the cadets and presented a wreath to be laid in the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery in Oosterbeek, where many of those who fell during the battle now rest.

On the first Saturday in September, the people of Arnhem mark the sacrifice made by the Allied troops that attempted to liberate their town in September 1944, with a commemorative road march.

The group from Taunton entered two marching teams, one on the 15KM route and the other on the 25KM, both teams completed their marches successfully.

The Squadron will be accepting new joiners on their next intake towards the end of September, there are currently less than ten places still available.
