SHOPPERS have been promised there will be no disruption after work started this week to replace the old water mains in a pedestrianised town centre street.

Workers are likely to complete the Wessex Water project, part of the ongoing Operation Clean and Clear across town, by mid-November, in time for the busy Christmas shopping period.

Then in the New Year, work will continue on updating Taunton’s High Street with modern street furniture, including bollards, cycle hoops and benches.

Bosses at Project Taunton, which is overseeing the regeneration of the town, are working to secure funding for the scheme from the Heritage Lottery and the Government.

The design team wants to enhance the existing tree planters and install modern lighting.
