THE ‘reels’ are well and truly in motion for a community group which has celebrated its formal opening.

Watchet Cinema Club received over £7,500 from West Somerset Council and donations from other sources, including the Watchet Harbour Community Bookshop, to help it progress.

The group began testing the water a year ago by showing films in Knights Templar School, and audiences of up 50 people proved it was well-received.

Funding has enabled the club to buy its own equipment and blackout curtains to ensure it remains a permanent fixture.

Project leader Anne Harrison said: “We’re thrilled that we have the funding from the district council to provide this facility and have been very grateful for the private donations as well.

“The school’s excited to be using it in its curriculum, and as it’s a community facility we hope other local organisations who want to use it will come forward.”

The next screening will be of the 2011 film The Lady, about Aung San Suu Kyi’s role in Burma’s democracy movement, on Friday, October 12, at 7pm.
