BILL and Lorraine Richards’s diamond anniversary party was more luxurious than their wedding reception.

The couple, who have lived in Curry Rivel throughout their marriage, reflected on their happy day back in 1952 – the year the Queen came to the throne.

Bill said: “It was just after the war and there were still shortages and things were on ration – but we did have a proper cake.”

Lorraine said: “I worked in the local grocer’s in the village and remember cutting up butter into one ounce pieces to sell on ration.”

They married in the village church, attended by their two sisters, and held the reception in the church hall.

Bill, a former trumpeter with the local marching band, and Lorraine have two children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

They enjoyed a diamond celebration with family, friends, neighbours and carers in the Yarlington retirement home, where they live, in Parsonage Place.
