Sainsbury's shoppers dig deep to feed the hungry
8:00pm Friday 12th October 2012 in News
KIND-HEARTED shoppers have bought food for the needy and hungry at a Sainsbury’s charity event.
Visitors to the supermarket’s Hankridge store were given a shopping list of food items needed by the charity FareShare, which aims to reduce food poverty and food waste across the UK.
Run in partnership with Sainsbury’s, FareShare’s Million Meal Appeal encouraged customers to help make a difference by adding just one extra item to their shopping to help those in need with every meal donated matched by Sainsbury’s.
The final amount of food donated has not yet been confirmed.
Surprisingly, a spokesman for Sainsbury’s said “none of the charities came forward” to express an interest in the food, so it will now be distributed via the supermarket’s head office.
They said the day was “a great success” and shoppers were “very generous”.
A spokesman for FareShare added: “A million thanks to all the generous customers who have donated lots of food items to FareShare”.
