GAS masks and clothing from 1939 set the tone for children from St Michael’s First School, Minehead, when they brought history to life.

The year four pupils re-enacted the evacuation of children during the Second World War, travelling by steam train along the West Somerset Railway to Watchet.

They took part in a drama about the evacuation at Watchet to give them a taste of what youngsters experienced during the war.

Year four teacher Jane Wheeler said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed their day and have responded enthusiastically and produced some fabulous story writing.

“It is extremely important to get involved with trips like this – it is living history.

“We had a wonderful time and the day was made especially memorable by the volunteers who kindly gave up their time to re-live their memories and tell us stories about the Second World War evacuation.”
