Kerbsite cardboard recycling set to start

PLASTIC bottles and cardboard are set to be collected for recycling from homes in the Taunton and Wellington area as part of a new pilot scheme.

New Collection containers and leaflets will be delivered by the Somerset Waste Partnership to all residents on the trials from Monday.

The first 'Sort It Plus' trial collections in Taunton Deane will start on May 19 and the trial rounds will be in the Queensway area of Comeytrowe, Langford Budville, Nynehead, West Monkton, as well as the Obridge Road, Nerrols Farm, and Staplegrove Road areas of Taunton.

People who are part of the trials will receive a new green box for cardboard and plastic bottles, which is designed to stack on the existing green box for paper, glass, food and drinks cans, foil and other items.

Nigel Woollcombe-Adams, chair of Somerset Waste Partnership, said: "The Sort It Plus trials will build on the success of current recycling collections in Somerset, by testing new service options and new collection vehicle designs.

"It's important local residents covered by the trials understand the new system, so all will be sent a service leaflet to explain the trial arrangements and we will hold roadshows to answer questions face to face."

Cllr Melvyn Mullins, Taunton Deane Council's portfolio holder for environmental services, added: "A lot of people ask about adding plastic bottles and cardboard to our kerbside recycling collections and the trials will influence the collection system introduced across Taunton Deane."

The trials will run until March 2009.

Roadshows for the trial areas will be held as follows: May 15, 1-3pm, Brewsters Car Park, Massingham Park, Priorswood Road, Taunton; May 15, 4-6pm, Taunton Vale Sports Club car park, Gipsy Lane, Staplegrove, Taunton; May 16, 10am-12pm, Nynehead Village Hall car park; 2-4pm, Comeytrowe Community Hall car park, Pitts Close, Taunton.

I think this is a great idea, I only wish Sedgemoor would follow in line with Taunton Deane we have rubbish collections every week, recycling every two weeks, within the recycling we cant even recycle the food waste like Taunton its rubbish here. we waste so much that could be recycled.
