THE meeting of Taunton District Scout Fellowship on May 6 was listed in the programme as a workshop for the designing and making of special birthday cards, and was to be led by Jane Reed.
Unfortunately family illness meant that she could only be present at the very beginning, but she had assembled the necessary materials and passed on some of her ideas to members Yvonne and Abigail, who passed them on to the group.
There was a very good attendance so further materials had to be acquired and prepared at short notice as the evening progressed. By the end of the session everybody had been successful and had also been refreshed with tea and biscuits at the same time.

The following evening the Welsh Society had invited members to join them for Michael's Magical Mystery Tour. The person who is a member of both organisations is Michael Rourke and he has organised similar tours for many years. This time he took members as far as East Budleigh, with driver Andrew of Taunton Coachways negotiating some challenging roads, steep, narrow and twisting over the Blackdowns and through rural Devon. The route went through Hemyock, Dunkeswell, Honiton and Ottery St Mary. Michael is a fount of knowledge and talked about the extended construction period for Wellington Monument, the American forces flying Liberators out of Dunkeswell to patrol the Western Approaches, the theft of the treasures from Dunkeswell Abbey by the King and his Exchequer on February 14, 1539, and of Sir Walter Raleigh's piratical activities. On the way back members stopped at The Hungry Fox in Broadclyst for a buffet meal before going back to Taunton at 10.15pm.
