Spreading the restorative message

RESTORATIVE justice leaders in Wellington have been spreading the word to secondary school students in the town.

Members of the community justice panel went to Court Fields Community School this week as part of Somerset County Council's 'Restorative Approaches in Schools' programme.

The panel aims to bring offenders and victims before trained volunteers to agree 'restorative' punishments to try and reform behaviour.

Panel organisers met students from the school to share experiences about the restorative process.

Andrew Govier, Somerset county councillor for Wellington, said: "Victims and perpetrators of crime are normally kept completely separate, the restorative approach brings them together and that is something that benefits both parties.

"The result is something that could have a real positive impact on the communities of Wellington, Milverton and Wiveliscombe."

The Wellington Community Justice Panel was launched on April 10, modelled on the ground-breaking panel established in Chard and Ilminster in 2005.

The Chard and Ilminster project is backed by the County Gazette's sister paper, the Chard and Ilminster News.

Restorative Justice is well established in Somerset County Council's educational strategy and is used in 34 schools.
