THE heavy wind and rain that has battered the region over the last 48 hours looks set to subside going into the weekend, say weather experts.

Somerset has seen strong gales, heavy rain and in some places heavy snow as the tail end of the Atlantic cyclone dubbed 'Storm Rachel' swept across the county.

This morning commuters in Taunton faced delays with roads affected by flood waters and fallen trees with the River Tone bursting its banks in places.

Somerset County Council Highways Department said they had reacted to 36 call outs between 4pm on Wednesday and 8am on Thursday, including 21 reports of fallen trees and eight reports of flooding.

However the weather looks set to improve according to the met office as the yellow weather warning that had been in place earlier today has been lifted.

Throughout the night and into Friday morning scattered showers are still to be expected with temperatures expected to remain around freezing.
