PEOPLE in Somerset are being invited this month (July) by a farm shop to enter competition to find the weirdest vegetable in the county.

Staff at Rumwell Farm Shop are challenging people – young and old – to find wonderfully shaped vegetables.

Anne Mitchell, Co-Owner of the farm shop, which is located in Rumwell on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, explained: “We would like everyone who enters to be as imaginative as possible. Although we don’t have any hard and fast rules we are looking for vegetables that resemble people, animals, or are unusually shaped or grotesque.”

Youngsters aged from five to 15 can enter the children’s competition and people aged 16 plus can enter the adults’ competition.

The rules are very simple. There are four age categories in the children’s competition: under fives, five to eight-years-old, nine to 11 and 12 to 15 years and the adults’ competition is for people aged 16 plus.

Any shape or size vegetable can be entered, but no other products can be used to change the appearance of the vegetable.

The winner of each age group will receive a certificate and a £10 Rumwell Farm Shop voucher. One runner up in each category will each get a certificate and a £5 gift voucher.

Entry forms are available on request from the till area at the farm shop. The closing date for entries will be 5pm on Friday, September 25, 2015.

The vegetables will be displayed anonymously on Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27 and customers will be asked to vote for their favourite veggie.

Entrants should note that vegetables entered for the competition will not be returned unless they express, on their entry form, that they wish them to be.

Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free range eggs at the gate.

Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased and the farm shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business.

Rumwell Farm Shop has a traditional butchery counter selling free range pork and Aberdeen Angus beef reared just four miles away on the family farm. There is also a delicatessen, bakery, jam kitchen and food hall.

Home grown potatoes are also still available as well as everything from fruit, vegetables and groceries to plants, flowers, gifts and cards.

The Rumwell Café, which opened in May 2015, covers 220 square metres and is able to seat approximately 80 people. The food prepared in the café kitchen is sourced from the farm shop, the Mitchell family farm, which is just four miles away, and regional suppliers.

Families are welcome to the café and there is a menu especially for children. The café also serves afternoon teas, carvery on a Sunday and is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages. To add to this it also has a separate gluten free menu.
